Starlings Pre-school is based on free flow play, between the Caterpillar and Butterfly rooms, so mostly children choose what to do.  We also have adult-led learning opportunities in small groups or one-to-one. Your childs key person will be responsible for guiding your child through the “Early Years Foundation Stage” (EYFS) and the activities provided help support that.

Within the group, all children are supported in developing their potential at their own pace, as every child is unique.  Children develop in the context of relations and the environment around them.  This is unique to each family and reflects individual communities and cultures.  The unique child reaches out to relate to people and things through the Characteristics of Effective Learning, which move through all areas of learning.

Children are learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.

Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first:

    1.    Communication and language
    2.    Physical development
    3.    Personal, social and emotional development

These prime areas are those most essential for healthy development and future learning.

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas.

These being:

    1.    Literacy
    2.    Mathematics
    3.    Understanding the world
    4.    Expressive arts and design
